Having wanted to re-create this look for a while, I started looking through old lampshades that had a good solid wire framing. Obviously not all lampshades can be stripped of fabric without losing it's shape, but some can. I had this one lampshade lying around that had a big rip in the side of the fabric and I wanted to do something with it but couldn't decide what. That's when I noticed how sturdy the frame of the lampshade was. So I began ripping all the remaining fabric off.
